A full-time job generally takes up a third of your working week. Those other sixteen hours? Sleeping and downtime. If your child is spending all those hours working, surely you’d prefer them to be working on something that gets them jumping out of bed in the mornings. Something that challenges them enough to get better at everyday and excites them to make a difference.

Well… Whether they have a hustlin’ grindset or just after a job that pays the bills, we have some great (and free) nationally recognised courses that can lead them to careers that sound like a dream. Is a 9-to-5 up their alley? Do they want to work your own hours? See themselves as their own boss? Our good mates over at Job Trainer have got them covered. Here are our top picks on the courses they’ve got on offer:

1. Auslan

Auslan, short for Australian Sign Language, is one of 300 sign languages spoken around the world. According to the Australian Network on Disability, 1 in 6 Australians are affected by hearing loss. Being proficient to communicate in Auslan fluently is an important skill to have – it’s a way to connect in a rich and meaningful way, to people of all ages, careers and events. If your teen wants another skill under their belt without the stress of full-time study, this is a course they can pick up to work around their busy lifestyle. With awesome career prospects like an interpreter, teacher and support worker, they can get qualified with a Certificate II, III or IV in Auslan!

2. Interior Design

From what they get up to nowadays, it’s probably fair to say that this next generation are a bit cluey to what is stylish and trendy. They love to create their own spaces and an atmosphere that represents who they are, so why not see them make a career out of making someone’s home or space come to life? From tight budgets, staging for properties to some questionable taste out there – well, we say, challenge accepted. If your teen is up for it too, suss out how they can get started for free in a Diploma of Interior Design.

3. Screen and Media

Your child can be an allround expert in all things film, television, radio and podcasting! Nowadays, you don’t need to be a massive media personality or influencer to land a podcast. Even if your teen prefers to work behind-the-scenes, this Certificate IV in Screen and Media is perfect for them to get trained up in making magic happen on-air, or in post-production. They will get taught by industry professionals, be offered endless opportunities and make connections within the industry!

4. Floristry

Arranging flowers is an artform, but it’s nothing new to the tangible motor skills they improved on growing up. It’s not easy, but it would be an amazing feeling for your teen to know that they made someone feel special whether it’s through a bouquet on their birthday or an arch at their wedding – if that’s their thing. Florists play a big part in making events come to life. If they’re keen on starting your own flourishing business or a side-hustle, a Certificate II in Floristry might be for them.

5. Entrepreneurship and New Business

New ventures and ideas can be a little hard to get off the ground but it is possible with hard work and determination. A Certificate III or IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business provides them with the confidence, leadership skills and the tools to start your own business! If they’re passionate about an idea that provides a service or item that’s highly in demand, your child will be reeling in some moola in no time. Find out how they can get started and trained by qualified professionals!

If your teen has been looking for a meaningful career that fulfils their sense of purpose, or looking at furthering their skills and interests, Job Trainer has the above and hundreds of free* courses available, ready to explore! Ensure they’re following their passions and walking away with a nationally recognised qualification, without having to pay a cent! Our advice for them is to find a career they love!
