In classrooms across the world assignments all of a sudden look a whole lot better.

It’s the Canva effect.

Because – and forgive us for sounding like a sponsored post – with Canva’s stylish templates, user-friendly experience, and great free options, designing is just too easy. And when you help make people look good, especially so effortlessly, well, they tend to fall in love with you. And design alone isn’t the only reason young people are stanning this brand.

But first let’s look at its sheer influence. Helmed by Melanie Perkins, the homegrown Australian tech company announced its USD $15 billion valuation in April 2021 and has more than 55 million monthly active users today.

Since 2013 Canva has been on a mission to make design and publishing more accessible for everyone. They’ve gone head-to-head with industry giants like Microsoft and Adobe and have rightfully carved out their own unique offerings drawing a devoted following that’s hard to beat.

It goes beyond the classroom too, into the office, when organising events, or even for social media content. Presentations, slideshows, infographics, newsletters, magazine covers, RSVP invites, resumes, Instagram posts, Instagram stories. For creative, visual-thinking Gen Zs, it’s a perfect match.

But this isn’t the only reason young people love the billion-dollar brand.

Just look at these four stats from our Gen Z & Corporate Activism report:

  • Sustainability (79%, where respondents could choose more than one option) is the #1 issue Gen Zs want businesses to help tackle
  • 86% said they are willing to spend more on a company that shares their concerns
  • 74% want businesses to publicise the diversity of their workplace
  • 78% like to see diversity in the media they consume

Canva hits all those points, and they’re being vocal about it.

On the sustainability front, Canva reports their head office is powered by 100% renewable energy and that their global operations will make the same transition by 2024. Their organic waste is composed, all single-use plastics are a no-go, and a tree is planted for every print order placed.

On top of that, for climate striking Gen Zs Canva was quick to meet their needs with climate change-related templates like posters, flyers and social media materials that have been downloaded millions of times.

Their Diverse Creator Fund sees the platform showcasing artists from diverse backgrounds, and their social media channels are a refreshing mix of content too.

If you’re caring like Canva, Gen Z will care about you.
