Over the past few years Australia has gradually been dethroned as the country with the most livable cities in the world.

And its position as a world favourite for higher education also appears to be slipping, according to Campus Advisor.

Campus Advisor surveyed more than 17,000 students around the world about their higher education experiences over the past year to compile a list of the top 20 countries to live and study as a student.

The rankings take into account:

  • Quality of education
  • Cost of living
  • Student diversity
  • Arts & culture
  • Student social scene
  • And graduate career prospects

Australia scored a pretty decent overall score of 4.48 out of 5. Here’s a breakdown of those rating scores:

  • Social life scored highly at 4.92
  • Graduate career prospects came in close second at 4.73
  • Quality of education rated a solid 4.66
  • Arts & culture followed with a rate of 4.25
  • While cost of living rated just 3.88 out of 5

Campus advisor named The University of Queensland as the 2022 Best University in Australia, while Melbourne was crowned 2022 Best Student City in Australia.

This put Australia overall in 3rd place, which let’s be fair is a pretty solid effort. But for a nation who prizes gold and punching above our weight, it’s worth taking a look at who beat us and why in the high stakes global game of university education.

So which countries beat the land down under?
