Think you need a uni degree to get yourself a high-paying job?
Not quite.
In fact, there’s a pretty surprising variety of careers out there paying pretty well that don’t require a uni degree, though there might be a catch or two (long or erratic hours, challenging or dangerous work environments, lots of time spent standing or sitting etc.)
Here are the five of the most interesting or unique high-paying jobs that we came across on this Reddit thread.
Cray fisher
While cray fishing might be a fave summertime pastime for many Aussies, according to one Reddit user you can actually earn up to $150k a year as a commercial cray fisher.
Yeah, you read that right. Up to $150k a year.
“Cray fishing in Jurien Bay, Geraldton, Kalbarri region of WA, 100k-150k if you can find a boat that pays percentage,” they said.
“Tough job on those sort of boats though.”

According to some Reddit users council positions for these roles require only three days of training and you can earn pretty decent cash as a casual.
The catch? Long, erratic hours, little work over the Chrissy period and the inherent dangers that are associated with standing on the side roads and highways.
Insurance broking
In case you weren’t familiar, insurance broking entails selling, soliciting, and negotiating insurance on behalf of clients for compensation. To be clear – insurance brokers don’t work for insurance companies but act as intermediaries between consumers and companies.
And boy, does it pay well for a profession that doesn’t require a degree, as one user explained.
“(I earn) $83k as a broker plus comms. It’s my second year in insurance and I look after domestic clients,” they said.
“It’s a good market at the moment and you can negotiate your salary with most companies.”
Truck driver
While truck driving doesn’t have the most glamorous rep, it can be a pretty satisfying job if you value flexible hours and the wide, open road.
And according to one Reddit user you can take home some pretty decent cash as a truck driver, you don’t need a university degree, and the hours can actually be pretty decent (if you get lucky).
“I’m on 80k a year and not even doing heavy haulage. Home by 11 am every day,” they said.
Air Traffic Controller
Not only is this a pretty badass-sounding profession to get into, but according to Reddit users it pays well, offers reliable hours and great benefits.
Oh, and you’re paid to train for the role.
“Air Traffic Control pays $200k+ a year plus super, 36-hour work weeks. And no, these aren’t the flight marshallers on the ground with wands… think the tall towers at airports clearing pilots to land and take-off, although most controllers work in an office building using radar to control flights between airports,” a user wrote.
“The educational requirement is graduating high school. They pay you over $50k a year to train at their training college where you get a Diploma in Aviation while learning how to control.”
Not bad. Not bad at all.
